Infiltrated Pits: Using Regional Groundwater Data to Estimate Methane Emissions from Pit Latrines

نویسندگان

چکیده

On-site sanitation systems (OSS), such as pit latrines, are an important source of methane (CH4), with emissions increasing when they wet, and this occurs anaerobic conditions dominate. This paper presents the development a model, which uses seasonal changes in groundwater to account for fluctuating inundation and, therefore, associated CH4 from varying degrees anerobic examined. Given that observed timeseries table depth at high enough spatial temporal resolutions often difficult obtain low- middle-income countries (LMICs), inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation is used generate values whole region, then used, alongside average latrine depth, determine areas inundation. Outcomes further informed open-source contextual data, covering population, urban/rural split, facility before using methodologies Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) data. As case study, we use data Senegal illustrate how model works. Results show total month January be ~1.69 kt CH4. We have also discussed potential satellite remote sensing regions where access historical limited. Understanding most likely change could lead incentives better management strategies, well reduction production.

Methane emissions from lakes: Dependence of lake characteristics, two regional assessments, and a global estimate

[1] Lake sediments are ‘‘hot spots’’ of methane production in the landscape. However, regional and global lake methane emissions, contributing to the greenhouse effect, are poorly known. We developed predictions of methane emissions from easily measured lake characteristics based on measurements for 11 North American and 13 Swedish lakes, and literature values from 49 lakes. Results suggest tha...

Evaluation of the laser methane detector to estimate methane emissions from ewes and steers1

The laser methane detector (LMD) has been proposed as a method to characterize enteric methane (CH4) emissions from animals in a natural environment. To validate LMD use, its CH4 outputs (LMD-CH4), were compared against CH4 measured with respiration chambers (chamber-CH4). The LMD was used to measure CH4 concentration (μL/L) in the exhaled air of 24 lactating ewes and 72 finishing steers. In ew...

Estimate of methane emissions from the U.S. natural gas industry.

Global methane emissions from the fossil fuel industries have been poorly quantified and, in many cases, emissions are not well-known even at the country level. Historically, methane emissions from the U.S. gas industry have been based on sparse data, incorrect assumptions, or both. As a result, the estimate of the contribution these emissions make to the global methane inventory could be inacc...

Pit Latrines and Groundwater Contamination: Negative Impacts of a Popular Sanitation Method

Pit Latrines and Groundwater Contamination Negative Impacts of a Popular Sanitation Method Worldwide an estimated 1.77 billion people use pit latrines as their primary mode of sanitation. With the prevalence of pit latrine use growing in developing countries, there is heightened concern about the negative impacts on drinking water. A new review assesses the known and measured environmental heal...
